Bug #12323
Electrum offline signing
100%
Description
The used Electrum version 2.7.9 has an offline signing bug - tries to connect to the server and times out failing to sign the transaction. This bug makes Tails unusable as a secure bitcoin wallet. This bug is fixed in the >=2.7.11 versions of Electrum.

Hello:
Could you point me out to an Electrum source about this bug?
I only found https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=848303
and https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/2146
but they seem to be fixed with the Electrum package shipped in Tails.

The point is that the Electrum 2.7.9 that is installed on current version of Tails has an offline signing bug. I don't have any more information for you, other than the Electrum changelog that states that the offline signing bug has been fixed in version 2.7.11: https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/RELEASE-NOTES#L77
I have found one more guy complaining about this here:

I have contacted the Debian mantainters of the package to see when it is going to be updated ( https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/electrum )

I am afraid that Stretch is already in Deep Freeze, so I doubt they will upload the package for Stretch...
We have to wait a bit to have a newer Electrum version.

Please clarify what needs to be waited for before Electrum can be upgraded to a new version. Is there anywhere I can assist to help get this done faster?

Can we PLEASE get an update for Electrum? The 2.7.9 version makes it impossible to sign a bitcoin transaction offline. That's one of the main reasons to use tails for users wanting to have a secure cold storage and transferring via an air gapped system.

I'm afraid shouting won't help. There are a few other areas of Tails where improvements will benefit all Tails users, so please understand we're prioritizing them over adding new features to a component (Electrum) that is used by a small amount of users.

Sure, that's a valid feature request. Nobody is actively working on improving Electrum support in Tails at this point. I've just sent a call for help about it. My hopes it'll work are quite slim but who knows :) Worst case, once Tails is based on Debian Buster (best case: 2018Q3; worst case: mid-2019) this feature will be included.

Sorry, the idea with bolding the PLEASE wasn't intended as screaming but a desperate plea.
I've created a post on reddit to promote this issue as well and hopefully find some help: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/7ghnhm/the_electrum_version_bundled_in_tails_is_really/
