https://tails.boum.org/support/faq#index28h2 should mention that i2p is better if you want to download.

Mention that there will be permissions issues.

I didn't know it was possible to do Torrent on I2P. That's cool!

#3 Updated by emmapeel about 3 years ago

Maybe that is why I2P users complain about not enough downloading space :)

There's a bittorrent client bundled (I2PSnark, a port of Snark to I2P) but there's a catch: the torrents have to be available on I2P. These days many torrents will be available in I2P thanks to vuze including I2P support via a plugin, causing many--but not all--torrents to just "just work".

With respect to emmapeel:bugfix/9563-mention-i2p-for-torrents, here are a couple of comments:

+ - To install the torrent software you can consult [[our
+ documentation|doc/advanced_topics/additional_software/]].
+

This should be removed as the torrent client is available by default in i2p-browser at http://127.0.0.1:7657/i2psnark or via the "Torrents" links in the router console. Indeed, there's nothing to install if you want to torrent on I2P and you cannot use a regular bittorrent client to bittorent on I2P; any torrent client needs to know how to "speak" I2P and very (very) few can do this.

Additionally, I think it would be good to mention that

  • the amnesia user does not have access to I2P's configuration directory, requiring a user to set an administrative password to be able to access any of the files at /var/lib/i2p/i2p-config
  • there is no persistence preset for I2P and unless persistence is manually enabled, any torrents downloaded will be lost when Tails is shut down

Thanks kytv! No idea it was so easy. I have adapted the changes, although maybe now the information is a bit too big for the FAQ, and should be added to the I2P docs page...

Please review again.

kytv, may you please have a look wrt. technical correctness (and English language, perhaps) and then reassign to sajolida?

Oops, I didn't see that this was assigned to kytv and already reviewed it. Anyway, I think both reviews are complementary.

It's great to investigate documenting an alternative to BitTorrent as it's a frequent topic. I didn't know I2P allowed this!

Regarding the content and structure of your changes:

  • The first sentence in the section now feels weird: "Tails does not ship any BitTorrent software and is unlikely to do so in the future." as it's actually possible to do BitTorrent over I2P already, right?
  • As a consequence, maybe we would benefit from two h3 titles. A first one about "Tor" → same problem as explained already, and another one about "I2P" → your new section.
  • The external ressources (https://geti2p.net/en/docs/applications/bittorrent) is quite obscure to read and was not very useful for me to understand what this is about. I guess that if we already have a BitTorrent client embeded, we should move this ressource at the end and have the most action-oriented points first.

Other than that, I pushed a bunch of small improvements. I suggest you have a look at a4d8dfb..1475dd0 and tell me what you think.

Thanks for working on this. I'll forward you in private another draft
that Spencer submitted to me in private. It's probably fine to make it
public and I'll put you in touch to join efforts.

I started doing small fixed on your draft but then I realized that
maybe instead of documenting this in the FAQ, what about add it to
/doc/anonymous_internet/i2p.

To me the FAQ is more about stuff we don't do or cannot really
document elsewhere. Here we're talking about a real feature that
deserves to be in the main documentation. Unless you think it's too
weird to use due to "Hard to exchange files with the I2P Browser".

I'm also wondering whether we should move "Hard to exchange files with
the I2P Browser" to /doc/anonymous_internet/i2p.

Keeping these tickets open, because i2p might come back.
